Shore Area NOW Updates and Info:

1.   Next meeting is Thursday, April 5th.

2.   Future meetings will be the 1st Thursday of every month. Contact Abbie if you have an idea for a Chapter Meeting activity or know someone who would be a good speaker for a Chapter Meeting.

3.   Abbie shared that the February Chapter Meeting was a success with Maya Abdel-Megid (a high school senior) speaking on the prominent role of women in Islam's history. The Chapter Leadership is hoping to plan a visit to a local mosque to learn more about the Muslim community.

4.   Abbie shared that one of the main goals in restarting the chapter was gaining visibility in the community. Towards that goal:

a.   a number of chapter members attended the Women's Convention in Asbury Park on February 24th. Mariel spoke on one of the panels regarding her run for office for NJ Assembly District 13.

b.   she and Lynn attended the "Know Her Truths" Panel Discussion at the Unitarian Church in Lincroft on February 18th. This panel was comprised of women who were previously incarcerated in NJ along with women who were educators/social workers/activists working to help women in jail.

c.   our chapter became official members of the NJ Coalition Against Human Trafficking (www.njhumantrafficking.org).

d.   Abbie encouraged the group wear their NOW shirts and attend the special screening and panel discussion of the movie "I Am Jane Doe" on April 12, 2018 at 10:00am at Monmouth University's Pollack Theatre. This is a documentary about the underage victims of sex trafficking. This film portrays the long and painful legal process that victims and families face in trying to hold internet companies (Backpage) responsible for their role in this horror.

Program: Guest Speaker - Tricia Maguire

Tricia Maguire is a Shore Area NOW Member and the 2018 Democratic candidate for Middletown Township Committee.  Tricia was born and raised in Monmouth County and moved to Middletown in 2003 with her husband Bob and their three daughters Maeve, Josie and Fiona. Tricia has twenty-five years of experience as a community focused professional, advocate, and executive board level volunteer. She has experience in education, Annual Pledge Funds, Growth and Strategic Planning. She has served the community as a coach & educator for 15 years.

Tricia ran for the Middletown Township Committee in 2017 because she wanted to make a difference for Middletown. She learned many lessons from the 2017 run and decided to go for the win in 2018. She engaged the group on what it was like to run for public office, what it is like to campaign and what is needed to campaign. She answered any and all questions from the group with candor and humor and encouraged others to run. It was an enlightening and engaging conversation.

We were also lucky to have Amber Gesslein, a Shore Area NOW Member, be a part of the discussion group. Amber recently formally announced her candidacy for Monmouth County Freeholder. She did not hold back on giving her valuable insights into the process. We plan on having Amber speak at a future meeting.

We all received an important education and it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Another chapter member present at the meeting expressed strong interest in running for office.
