Nov 1, 2018 Chapter Meeting will feature a speaker, Sue Flynn, from the New Jersey Coaliton Against Human Trafficking. 

7:00pm at the Eatontown Library at 33 Broad St. in Eatontown.  Pleanty of parking behind the library.

 

Sue Flynn, an advocate and volunteer with the Junior League of Monmouth County for over 13 years, including four years of Assistant Chair and Chair of the Junior Leagues of New Jersey State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC); a committee that advocates on behalf of women and children in need in New Jersey. She is on the steering committee of the New Jersey Coalition Against Human Trafficking. Additionally, she sits on many sub-committees including the legislative committee and the SOAP Committee (save our adolescence from prostitution). Sue is an avid runner and a head coach for her local chapter of Girls on the Run, where she helps to inspire girls to be healthy and confident.    

The New Jersey Coalition Against Human Trafficking was formed in 2011 and is made up of over 150 diverse groups in the state, which include nonprofits, faith-based organizations, government agencies, academics, law enforcement, and direct service providers. 

The NJCAHT works to serve as the hub of community efforts statewide to increase coordination and visibility of NJ’s commitment to end human trafficking.

Our speaker will be Meghan Cubano is the Community Engagement Director for HomeFront, an organization working to break the cycle of poverty and end homelessness in Central New Jersey. Some of the services HomeFront provides are emergency shelter, homelessness prevention, emergency food, clothing, affordable housing search, and job placement to name a few. Meghan will talk about her experiences as Community Engagement Director and discuss how we can help break the cycle of poverty.

APRIL  2018  SHORE AREA NOW Chapter Meeting

7:00pm at the Eatontown Library on 33 Broad St. in Eatontown.  

Our speaker will be Sue Fulton, presently Executive Director, Women in the Service Change Initiative (WiSCI) and appointed member of Gov Murphy's transition team.

Brenda S. “Sue” Fulton is a 1980 West Point graduate, part of the first class to admit women. She was commissioned in the Army, served as a platoon leader and company commander in Germany, and was honorably discharged at the rank of Captain. In 2009, she co-founded Knights Out, the organization of LGBT West Point alumni and allies, and a year later became a founding board member of OutServe, the association of actively-serving LGBT military members; in both roles she was an active advocate for the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” As President of SPARTA, she played a leading role in lifting the military’s ban on transgender service in 2013.

 

In July 2011 she was appointed by President Obama as the first openly gay member of the West Point Board of Visitors, and became the first female USMA graduate to chair the Board in 2015. In 2017, she was appointed to the Board of Visitors for the National Defense University in Washington, DC; she was also recognized as one of NBC Out’s first #Pride30, a list of innovators, changemakers, and rising stars.

 

Fulton is the Executive Director of Women in the Service Change Initiative (WiSCI), a new organization working for the success of gender integration in the US Armed Forces.

 

In December, 2012, after 17 years together, Fulton and her partner Penny Gnesin became the first same-sex couple to marry in the West Point Cadet Chapel. They live in Asbury Park, NJ.

Please join us for our February meeting, featuring Maya Abdel-Megid!

Maya will be talking about the prominent role of women in Islam, showing how the current socio-political image of a repressed woman does not reflect our past and present record of history. She will also discuss how Muslim women became revolutionaries within their own societies and how much innovation they have contributed to their respective fields in the US and around the world. We are very excited to have her, and all are welcome!
